Tips n' Tricks on how to balance work and life

The pandemic has forced many of us to combine work and life under one roof. The boundaries between what is work and what belongs to my private time are more and more blurring. While there are benefits of working at home, finding a work-life balance can become very complicated, however having a balance is crucial for you and your well-being.

We asked peers on how they deal with the home office situation. So here are some tips n’ tricks for you on how to have the perfect work-life balance!

1. Create your own workspace

In order to be productive, you need to be able to disconnect from work. Having a designated workspace is important for dividing working hours from your private life and free time. This can be a separate room or just the kitchen chair. Make it clear to your family or even roommates that this is your working area. Couch or bed should not deal as such, since they are too comfy and automatically associated with relaxation or sleep. For example, working from your bed, where you usually sleep or binge watch your favorite series, can be difficult and doesn’t help you get into the right frame of mind.

2. BREAK BREAK BREAK

Take a break. It’s that easy. No one will expect you to work full 8 hours a day, of course being accessible is important, however you shouldn’t be chained to your laptop. Move away from your workspace, go for a quick walk, meditate or just lay down-anything that helps you to recharge your battery is good. But just do it.

A small tip from our side: set yourself a time frame when you take your break (also setting an alarm is often very helpful).

3. Once again: Prioritize self-care

Taking care of yourself is so important for your but also everyone around you. I know, sometimes work obligations feel pressing and it seems impossible to take some time off, but you need it. It is not only good but necessary for a better work performance. Ask yourself what means self-care to me? For one it may be drinking a coffee and reading a book, for someone else it may mean taking a bath and for another person self-care is making music. So, what is it for you?

4. The power of the word NO!

Be realistic about what you can achieve at one day, just because you are at home doesn’t mean you have superpowers and can make the double amount of work as usual. Also say no to other obligations, just because you work from home doesn’t mean that you can do everything else.
