How to stay calm during the Holidays

The holidays are approaching, and most of us are stressed trying to buy some last presents, studying for final exams and trying to get everything in order before the lockdown. During this stressful time, many will be forced to spend more time with their families than they expected or spend more time by themselves than they wanted. Our Yang Club team has put together the 5 best activities to stay calm and relaxed during this years holiday season:

1. Engage in creative activities you usually don’t have time for

Becoming creative can not only take your mind off from negative thoughts, but you can also experience a creative side, you didn’t know you had. If you don’t feel like drawing or painting, coloring a mandala is a peaceful and calming activity. In our mindfulness Art Flow Box, you can find everything you need to get started with creating beautiful mandalas. You can of course also download some free samples from the one and only Mandala Queen Johanna Basford.

2. Try out Yoga to ease your mind and start the new year as stretched as possible

There are many different types of Yoga, and there might be one just right for you! If you want something relaxing and really go deep into Yoga poses, you could, for example, try Yin Yoga! Vinyasa Yoga can be suitable for beginners, as it is a little faster and makes you focus on your breath. Eleanor, my favorite Yoga teacher from Amsterdam, has uploaded some free online classes on her website. Try it out and start the new year with a cool head and relaxed muscles.

3. Start meditating and try to make it a habit

The market for mediation apps is booming, and new studies about its benefits are increasing. But meditation is not only a hot trend, but it is also proven to change your life if practice continuously. Try out this 8-minute mindfulness meditation and see if that’s something for you!

4. Enjoy good music

Listening to music can affect your mood in various ways. From getting you more energized for a run, a workout or some work, to helping you to ease off after a stressful day. Try out our The Yang Club Spotify playlist, while you bake cookies, wrap gifts or lay back and relax.

5. Most important during the holidays and, to be honest, also every other time of the year: take care of yourself!

It has been a challenging year for most of us, which is why it is essential to avoid self-judgement this year! Reflect on all the positive things that happened this year, every moment you were thankful for and your closest friends and family who are always by your side. It’s okay not to feel okay sometimes, but always remember: You are not alone. Everyone has those days. Self-compassion is not an easy thing to learn, but definitely something you can work on. Try out this 9-minute loving-kindness meditation and let us know how you feel after!
